Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a disease characterized by substantial enlargement of the prostate, which results in pressure being applied to the urethra and, ultimately, in problems related to urination.

The first clinical symptoms emerge after the age of 50 (microscopic variations in the prostate tissues may however be observed as early as after the age of 30). It applies to more than 50% of men over the age of 50 and more than 70% of men over the age of 60. Untreated BPH results in damage to the upper urinary tract and prostate cancer is six times higher in men suffering from BPH compared to healthy men.
