Diabetes Mellitus

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a disease of glucose metabolism (blood sugar) caused by disorder of insulin creation in pancreas or its receptors in the cell membrance. Insulin is a hormone that enables transfer of glucose into cells. DM is manifested by increased glucose level in blood (so called hyperglycemia).

There are two basic types of DM that have similar symptoms, but different causes, and that is why both types are treated in a different way.

Diabetes type I is that the pancreas cells do not produce sufficient amount of insulin. Treatment of DM type 1 consists in injection application of insulin together with a special diet.

Diabetes type _ is the most common type of the disease - over 90% of diabetics suffer from this type.
