Iron supplements are indicated in the prevention and treatment of iron deficiency resulting from inadequate diet malabsorption, pregnancy, and blood loss. The cause of iron deficiency should always be determined, as it may relate to a serious condition.
Iron is an essential component in the physiological formation of hemoglobin, adequate amounts of which are necessary for effective erythropoisis and resultant oxygen transport capacity of the blood. Because iron can convert from the ferrous(+2) to ferric(+3) form, oxygen may be held or released as needed. Therefore, iron is the main determinant of the oxygen supply to cells. Iron also serves as a cofactor of several essential enzymes. When taken orally, iron passes through the mucosal cells in ferrous state and is bound with a protein called transferrin. In this form, Iron is
transported in the body to bone marrow for red blood cell production.
Women are close to the deficiency borderline. Monthly blood loss from menstruation means a 28mg loss of iron. Lactation (1 to 2.5mg lost daily) and pregnancy (500-1000ma of iron donated to fetal growth and storage). Children with iron deficiency show signs of hyperactivity, decreased attention span and reduced IQ. These behavioral changes disappear with iron administration.
Excellent source of iron are Liver, other organ meats, beef, dried fruits, ham, dark green leafy vegetables.
Desiccated liver have been marketed as nutritional supplements for over a century. It is principally used as a source of heme iron. It may have hematinic activity. Hematinic activity refers to the ability of a substance to improve the quality of the blood, including hemoglobin level and number of erythrocytes. Desiccated liver contain heme iron, an absorbable form of iron, which may promote the production of hemoglobin.
Vitamin B12 (cyanocobalamin) is a water
soluble vitamin with an essential role in various metabolic and synthetic pathways. Deficiency of vitamin B12 may lead to megaloblastic anaemias and severe neurological damage. Treatment produces prompt haematological improvement.
